Iceland Day 3 Geocaching & The Blue Lagoon

We had a very laid-back and relaxed day three in Iceland. We had a super busy on-the-go day the day before so we wanted to just slow down and enjoy the city. We spent the first half of the day geocaching around Reykjavik.

Here is my rundown of geocaching. It's like a treasure hunt. You have co-ordinates you put in your GPS, then hunt it down. Sometimes the "cache" is a box of trinkets, other times it's just a film canister with a log to sign your name. It is a great family outdoor activity good for all ages and trust me, kids love it just as much, if not more, than adults. You can go to Geocaching.com to get the real deal details about it.

This is a golf course. See the golfer? Amazing. What a stunning view!

The cache hidden in the rocks.

Our treasure. When you take something you are supposed to leave something. Usually equal or greater than what you took. Everyone's version of treasure is different. My favorites are the hand made items. Wait until you see what I found on later caches on this trip.

I love this pic of the two of us with the mountains in the background! I couldn't figure out how to turn the timer on my camera on to take a picture with the two of us in it. I figured out a solution, which was to delay the shutter for 3 seconds.

So in order for me to be in the picture I had to run up to the camera, hit the button, run back to Aaron, pose and smile; then run back to it again so we could take several shots and pick the best. Aaron laughed at me the whole time so I'm sure I looked pretty silly.

Meditation Hill cache. It's an Earth Cache which means it brought you there to show you something awesome. There is no hidden treasure box. I really love them because it takes you to places you wouldn't normally travel. I love the secret places locals know.

To log this particular cache you had to sit in a meditative pose with the mountains behind you. It was fun and a beautiful view of the city.

We tried to find a cache that turned out to be accessible only by hiking to it. That wouldn't have been a problem but it was getting late in the day and we wanted to get to the Blue Lagoon before the sun went down. On the way back to the highway we had to drive on a road of sheer ice. You can't even see the black gravel underneath!

This was a very sterile looking KFC/Taco Bell. The menu was very limited. Only 5-6 items from each chain. Let's just say that Iceland's version of a burrito supreme isn't quite what it is in America. It had some sort of chili in it. Odd.

Here is 1000 Kronas, which is about $8.75.

The drive to the Blue Lagoon was so beautiful. The sunrises and sunsets in Iceland are truly amazing Sometimes it doesn't even look real.

You can see the steam from the hot springs from miles away.

Almost to the Blue Lagoon. The water is milky and a really strange light blue.

There were several times while we were driving through Iceland that it felt like we were driving on a different planet. Besides the yellow road marker, doesn't it look like another world?

One of the highlights of the trip for us was the Blue Lagoon. It is a geothermal spa located in the middle of a lava field. Awesome. The waters are rich in silica and sulphur and are supposed to have healing properties for people with skin conditions. The cost for the basic package was 35 euros which is about $48 each. We didn't bring towels so that was an extra $8 each.

The water temperature ranges from 98 to 102 degrees and it feels fantastic. It was so steamy it was hard to see anyone around us.

This is probably the best shot I have to see the odd blue color of the water. The sun went down pretty quick once we got there. I love the contrast of the black lava rocks with the white buildup on them and the blue water.

They had big buckets of silica mud at special stations for you to put on your face. A small bottle in the gift shop cost $100, so it was pretty cool that you can use it freely while you are there.

My sweet, silly husband giving me a foot rub!

Not long after I put my camera in my locker we had a nice little show of the Aurora Borealis! It was absolutely amazing to be relaxing in the Blue Lagoon and look up to see the Northern Lights. What a memorable night!
